05/17/2008: Wave of Hope

Okay, Billy’s Bike Shop is not always about riding your bike! We also enjoy raising money for beach walks! Besides, a beach walk on Bowman’s Beach is a great way to start the morning, especially when your purpose is to help find a cure for cancer. The 2K-10K walk, organized by the Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club to raise funds for Barbara’s Friends, the Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund, was created to become an annual event. Billy’s Bike Shop was excited to participate as both an event sponsor and a participant sponsor, donating fundraising dollars to all employees or customers that participated in the walk.

Billy’s Bike Shop also provided a “Green” water station which started the walkers off with a reusable refillable sport drink bottle filled with (not green) water. Not only did it prevent disposable waste from ending up on the beach, the bottles can be refilled at Billy’s Bike Shop or Billy’s Rentals for free. Billy’s Bike Shop also helped raise money by raffling off a cool retro Schwinn Bike. Snack bars, fresh fruit and sunscreen were available for the walkers, donated by local businesses. Famous Island musician, Danny Morgan, provided entertainment for those cooling down after their walk.

Approximately $10,000 was raised for Barbara’s Friends, which was founded in January 1995 by Frank and Betty Haskell to celebrate the life of their daughter, Barbara, who died of breast cancer at age 36 after a four-year battle. The Haskells created the foundation as part of their determination to turn their sorrow into a labor of love that might perhaps save others from facing the devastating disease.

Our own Sara Kramer (Billy’s Bike Shop Assistant Manager) biked to the event and ran the entire 10K distance AND she was one of the top fundraisers! Way to go Sara!
